How we test pan sets I’ve been testing several pan sets over the past few months. First, I assessed the variety of different types, sizes, and cooking surface of each set. I considered how heavy the pans were and whether this would affect their effective use, as well as the types of stovetops and oven temperatures they could be used on. Next, I examined the materials of the pans and lids. This included the quality of the cooking surface and ease of cleaning. As part of my testing, I prepared a variety of dishes—from simple fried eggs to stir-fries, sizzling chicken, steak, and chili—to see how the pans performed at different temperatures, sautéing, grilling, frying, and roasting. This set includes a nice selection of pans ranging from 20 cm to 30 cm—which also stack neatly inside each other when stored—as well as matching glass lids and a 30 cm wok. Many other brands and manufacturers of pan sets list the number of pans, cast iron pans, and saucepans per set as a total—not including lids and accessories. For example, my cheapest pan set, the Salter Megastone Pan Set, is classified as an eight-piece set, which equates to eight saucepans and saucepans, with the lids included separately. So, the Salter set comes in a total of twelve pieces when all items are taken into account. HexClad does the opposite and classifies the three lids as part of the seven-piece set. This means you only get four pans, not seven, as you might expect based on the name. This could be a bit disappointing or even misleading if you’re in a hurry. Given the price of the set, it would also have been nice to have at least one saucepan included, as it would give you virtually all the pots and pans you need. Not all pan sets are suitable for induction cooktops. Fortunately, those from HexClad work on induction cooktops as well as gas and electric stovetops. Each pan and its accompanying glass lids are also oven-safe—up to 204°C for the lids and up to 260°C for the pans. So you can easily transfer them from the stovetop to the oven without any problems at higher temperatures. I tested the pans for about ten minutes at a maximum of 260°C and noticed no difference compared to the lower temperatures (usually around or below 200°C) at which I normally cook. I also didn’t experience any charring or staining on the cooking material or the underside. I was also able to cook at a lower temperature on the stovetop compared to other pan sets. Using medium heat with a HexClad pan, I got similar results to using medium to high heat with other brands or pans. The quality of the pans is underscored by their considerable weight. And they were actually among the heaviest I tested when determining the best pan sets. The wok alone, for example, weighs just over two kilograms. Once you start adding ingredients, the weight quickly adds up, especially if you struggle with carrying heavier items or have limited mobility. Depending on your strength and ability, you may be able to use both hands when carrying a full wok or when moving a pan in and out of the oven, as I did. But on the stovetop and with fewer ingredients, I found the pans more manageable and could easily lift them with one hand, especially the 20 cm pan, which I now regularly use for frying eggs. So, you should weigh the weight and decide if you’re comfortable lifting, shaking, or cooking with heavier pans. Whether by hand or in the dishwasher, the HexClad pans were incredibly easy to clean, as the non-stick material prevented anything from sticking or burning—even when I intentionally left certain ingredients on the stovetop for longer. Personally, I preferred to wash the pans by hand, as warm soapy water easily removed all residue. For more stubborn stains, you can also soak the pans in water for about 10 to 15 minutes and then use a scouring pad to loosen and remove any residue. And if you’re cooking multiple dishes or portions in a row or spread out over an evening, I was pleased that a quick wipe with a paper towel or clean cloth removed all residue in seconds. Even though The Ordinary launched unexpectedly last year and caused quite a stir in the industry, NIOD has always been my first go-to brand. I was already very familiar with DECIEM when NIOD launched. I’d been using Fountain since its launch in 2013, as well as Hand Chemistry (now The Chemistry Brand), and later HIF. When Brandon Truaxe finally unveiled his first official skincare line, I was immediately on board. Their homepage states: “Our trendy collections of dresses, jeans, tops…” Words like “trendy” are a dead giveaway. The size is correct, but it doesn’t fit my proportions. The bust area is one size too large, but the top seam of the skirt (right at the hip) has the right circumference. Since the skirt doesn’t stretch, a size smaller would likely be a bit tight around the hips and not feel loose and flowy. It’s very lightweight (the material feels like a slightly rough bedsheet) and the bust is lined. My body measurements are for size reference. Quality: In my opinion, the quality is okay. The front buttons are also difficult to use. The small elastic loops are very stretchy and tiny (you need very small hands and fingernails to button them easily). A Rugs USA Rugs Review
I recently found new, matching rugs for my home. My hesitation was largely due to not wanting to spend thousands of dollars on one rug. After coming to terms with that, I discovered a world of rugs that were actually quite affordable at Rugs USA. The only problem at the time was that they were all available online, and I couldn’t touch them or see the actual colors. Also, since I live in Canada, there’s no easy return process, unlike our friends down south. But you know what ultimately outweighed not being able to touch, feel, or see the actual colors?! You’re right—it saved thousands of dollars. I took the plunge and did it. Knowing I’m not the only one with these concerns, I wanted to share an honest review of some Rugs USA rugs and offer some unfiltered insight to hopefully help you make your decision without being able to touch or see the rugs in person. Rugs USA – Washable Rugs I recently received my first machine-washable rug from Rugs USA – the Grey Atrium Medallion Washable Rug as a walk-in closet runner. As you can see in the pictures above and below, I didn’t use it in the walk-in closet, but it’s now hanging in the kitchen. You see, even if you have a rough idea of where you want something, it might not always work out, but I almost always have a backup! That’s not the point, but I want you to know it’s real! Would you believe me if I told you this 70 x 3.6 m runner costs under $150?! And what’s more, it’s washable?! It’s the perfect runner for high-traffic areas prone to spills or messes (e.g., kitchen, utility room). I have to say, the rug is thin – which doesn’t bother me, given its placement and intended use. For me, its function is to serve as a decorative piece, not to get stained every three seconds. So, if you’re looking for a fluffy and cozy rug, this isn’t the one for you. If you’re looking for an affordable, relatively durable, and washable rug for high-traffic areas, this is absolutely worth the price! Plus, I personally love the pattern and color scheme. With the rest of the textures and the warmer whites in the room, I just didn’t like it. So off to the playroom. If I’d decorated her room differently, it would have been great—again, that was total user error on my part, but I had a plan B! If you’re looking for a washable shag, this one is super cute. It’s a bit thicker than the Artium Medallion above. It’s nice and soft for my feet, but it feels a bit slippery. I think it just feels slippery, but it’s actually not that slippery (since Sloane, who runs pretty fast in the playroom, didn’t fall). It also warms up the room nicely. I can’t show you the room because it’s a total mess. But I can show you the rug under artificial light (since it’s in the basement, daylight is limited). Rugs USA Bestsellers Okay, I also chose a rug from the bestseller list for our living room. However, the selection was quickly narrowed down due to the required size – 12 x 16 inches. I boldly chose a cream-colored rug – the Textures Veronica Wool Braided Rug from Rugs USA. It instantly gave my room a warm, cozy feel and made it feel significantly larger. This rug is thick and exudes a warm, cozy vibe. I got a rug pad to keep it in place, but honestly, I don’t think the rug would move either way. I love this rug – from the color to the texture to the thickness. What I don’t like is that it sheds like crazy. When we got it, it shed uncontrollably. We’ve had it for about five months now, and it sheds less – not none at all. If I sit on the floor with Lulus, my pants are ruined. Would I do it again? Probably. Despite the whole lint situation, I still really like the rug. General Opinion on Rugs USA Overall, I’d say the price of Rugs USA rugs is really good, and considering how much you pay for them, I’d also say the quality more than makes up for the price. I’m not saying Rugs USA rugs match the quality of rugs costing thousands of dollars—but in a similar price range, they are higher quality than other rugs I’ve seen. If you’re still nervous about choosing, take a photo of your room and upload it to Canva. Then, add screenshots of the rugs you’re considering and see how they look in your space. This should help you narrow down your choices! If you’re still worried, always have a plan B whenever possible. You might end up installing a rug in a room you didn’t even know needed one!
